A Dream Within Reach
ELISA REYNA was a junior in high school when she found out she was pregnant with her second child. Her first daughter was a year old at the time. “I could handle one child, work and go to school, but two children!” Elisa was overwhelmed. Her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse seemed beyond her reach.
Her Parent Education Teacher from Bryan ISD became one of her best friends and mentors. She encouraged Reyna and helped her find scholarships for her senior year of high school. With her two children in hand, Reyna graduated from Bryan High School in May 2003. Her Parent Teacher Educator assisted her in applying for training through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) to get educational funding to enroll in the Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA) Program at Blinn College. Reyna worked hard and completed the CNA Program and received her certificate. After graduating with her Certificate, she was able to get a better paying job and was hired as a Nursing Assistant. But Reyna was living paycheck to paycheck so she decided to make some changes and sacrifices if she wanted a different result for herself and her family. With encouragement from her FSS Coordinator, she decided to enroll back in school at Blinn College.
Reyna explains, “Of course it has been a struggle. I am still juggling classes, work and children. The BVCOG Family Self Sufficiency Program keeps me focused on my goals. I have been in the FSS Program for a year now and since joining the program, I have finished my prerequisites for Blinn’s Nursing Program. The FSS Program is for people who want to make more money, get a better education, and achieve their dreams. The FSS staff will work with you to make your dreams a reality.”
