The Ombudsman Program
The Ombudsman Program advocates for nursing home and assisted living facility residents. It is authorized by state and federal laws. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman program trains and certifies volunteers to advocate for quality of life and quality of care for residents in Texas long-term care facilities such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Residents and families are served by using the talents of a specially trained volunteer. Ombudsmen identify, investigate and resolve complaints made by or on behalf of residents, and they support the development of family and resident councils. To promote the quality of care, the program seeks to coordinate professionals’ advocacy through organizations that are interested in long-term care and elderly right issues and regulatory agencies.
Certified volunteer ombudsman receives initial certification training from a professional staff ombudsman and completes a 60 days internship which begins on the day of the first accompanied shadow visit, and 12 hours of continuing education per year.
