The Brazos Valley Community Emergency Response Team is a regional CERT program that was established in 2002 to help citizens help themselves and neighbors in a disaster.

Community Preparedness

The BVCOG Community Preparedness Program is dedicated to promoting resilience and readiness across the Brazos Valley Region. This program actively engages residents, organizations, and local partners in preparing for a wide range of emergency situations—ranging from natural disasters to public health crises.

As part of this mission, the program manages the Brazos Valley Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a volunteer-based initiative that trains community members to assist in emergency response efforts. In addition to running the Regional CERT program, the Community Preparedness program offers a variety of life-saving educational opportunities, including:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

  • Stop the Bleed Training

  • Narcan (Naloxone) Administration

  • Basic CERT Training

  • Advanced and Supplemental CERT Courses

These trainings are designed to empower individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively during emergencies and to support first responders when needed. The BVCOG Community Preparedness Program plays a vital role in strengthening public safety and fostering a culture of preparedness throughout the region.

 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are volunteer-based groups that support local authorities during disasters and help educate the public on how to prepare for emergencies that may affect their area. When called upon, CERTs assist emergency services when their resources are stretched thin. Their training covers essential disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, traffic control, and basic medical aid. By applying what they’ve learned through classroom instruction and practical exercises, CERT members are able to provide assistance in their communities or workplaces after an incident—especially in situations where professional responders are delayed or unavailable.

The Brazos Valley CERT Program

The Brazos Valley CERT Program was established in 2002 with the intent on focusing citizens and community preparedness in times of disaster. The Joint Brazos Valley CERT Program currently covers the Counties of Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Washington, and Robertson County. We also have joint support with the Texas A&M Nursing Program CERT.

CERT teams in the Region are looking for new volunteers willing to serve their community. For information on how to join a local CERT team, or to get your organization trained in disaster preparedness, please contact Tanner Erb at (979) 595-2801 ext. 2029 or by email Tanner.Erb@bvcog.org.
